| Current & (Mostly) Recommended Books Posted: 06 May 2011 11:48 AM PDT Since people seem to like this sort of thing, a quick list of my current reading: - Attention & Time, edited by Nobre and Coull. An anthology papers on our ability to attend selectively to our surroundings.
- Their Arrows Will Dark the Sun, by Mark Denny. On the evolution and science of ballistics — you know, stuff that gets shot through the air.
- Rationality for Mortals, by Gerd Gigerenzer. On how people cope with uncertainty, which is to inconsistently and not well.
- In the Beat of a Heart, by John Whitfield. On the role of energy in biological life.
- Finite and Infinite Games, by James Carse. Games played for winning versus games played for the purpose of play.
- Inverting the Pyramid: The History of Football Tactics, by Jonathan Wilson. Fascinating and deeply geeky look at football (soccer) tactics over time.
- Health & the Rise of Civilization, by Mark Nathan Cohen. Challenging the belief that primitive societies were poor, ill and malnourished.
- Hotel Dreams: Luxury, Technology and Urban Ambition in America 1829-1929. The history and technology of America’s original luxury hotels.
- The Big Thirst, by Charles Fishman. On the end of the era of cheap water.
- Fatal Risk: A Cautionary Tale, by Roddy Boyd. The best book on AIG in and the financial crisis.
- Bloodlands: Europe Between Hitler and Stalin, by Timothy Snyder. Macabre but compelling reading about European personal geography between two of the most horrific personalities of the 20th century.
- The Age of Wonder: How the Romantic Generation Discovered the Beauty and Terror of Science. Great history of modern science’s first encounter with the arts.
